I am suffering from itching scalp that is really embarrassing. White flakes of dandruff makes me mad. I want instant remedy. Please help me out.

Try rinsing your hair and scalp with plain white vinegar before and after shampooing. I find this really helps with the itching and flaking, and it removes the build-up in your hair leaving it softer and shinier.

A dietary tip: try avoiding sugars and bread for a bit. Yeasty things also. Works wonders in preventing dandruff!

Almost always dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis. One warning about zinc pyrithione shampoos like Head and Shoulders is that many people have experienced weakened hair that tends to break from those products. I like the vinegar and dietary changes mentioned above, if more is necessary the excerpt below might help.

How is seborrheic dermatitis treated?
The treatment of seborrheic dermatitis depends on its location on the body. Treatment also depends on the person's age.

Seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp (dandruff) in adults and adolescents. Dandruff is usually treated with a shampoo that contains salicylic acid (some brand names: X-Seb, Scalpicin), the prescription medicine selenium sulfide (brand names: Selsun Blue, Exsel) or zinc pyrithione (some brand names: DHS Zinc, Head & Shoulders). These shampoos can be used 2 times a week. Shampoos with coal tar (some brand names: DHS Tar, Neutrogena T/Gel, Polytar) may be used 3 times a week. If you have dandruff, you might start by using one of these shampoos daily until your dandruff is controlled, and then use it 2 or 3 times a week.

When you use a dandruff shampoo, rub the shampoo into your hair thoroughly and let it stay on your hair and scalp for at least 5 minutes before rinsing. This will give it time to work.

If the shampoo alone doesn't help, your doctor might want you to use a prescription steroid lotion once or twice daily, in addition to the shampoo.

Wow I've never heard of the vinegar idea!! I'm going to suggest that to my partner, he uses Head and Shoulders every day and still has bad dandruff. Poor boy.

I've been using Head and Shoulders since I was a teenager with dandruff (I was on Roaccutane for a few years for acne), and it does the trick for me. Personally I haven't had any problems with hair breakage but I have also heard about that occurring in some people.

I don't have hair but my brother use to suffer from dry scalp, balding spot and occasionally a grey hair. He switch to a natural shampoo with olive & coconut oil, aloe vera, jojoba and many other healthy ingredients..and now his hair is noticeably healthier looking. He no longer has the side effects i mentioned above because he doesn't use the shampoo's with chemicals in them..chemicals like..polyquaternium 11,iodopropynyl butylcarbamate,methylparaben..etc

Thanks for warning me the downsides of the shampoo Hair and Shoulder. I was planning to get one for myself.

tea tree oil! go to any store and you can get it. even walmart. just look in the vitamins/supplements. it does wonders for dry itchy skin. and, yes it is instant relief as well as long term.

^^Nizoral is a good un.
Although polytar liquid is even better. Polytar is VERY strong and you will notice instant relief.
(Also use the hottest water possible when rinsing it out your hair). The stuff is a lifesaver.

use the hxc, head and shoulders. then when you sleep, make sure your hair is dry and put it up in like a headband /bandada if you can.

^^^^Head and shoulders does nothing for problem dandruff/itchy scalp.
Listen to "Enki". You most likely have seborrheic dermatitis (like myself).
Use a coal tar shampoo and you'll be fine.

Your dandruff may be caused by shampooing too much, strange as it sounds. When you wash everyday you strip the natural oils from your hair and scalp.
If you're getting an itch, it's definitely from dryness.

Mix two teaspoons of vinegar with six teaspoons of water and rub it against your scalp before you go to bed, then wrap your head with a towel. Apply the same solution to your hair once again in the morning when you wake up, then rinse it with water.

Thyme-ly Treatment for Dandruff

A thyme rinse can help alleviate dandruff. Boil 4 heaping tablespoons of dried thyme in 2 cups of boiling water for 10 minutes. Strain and allow to cool.
Pour half of the mixture over clean damp hair and massage into scalp. Do not rinse. Refrigerate what's left to use with your next shampoo.

Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek overnight in water and grind them into a paste in the morning.

Apply this fenugreek paste on your scalp and leave it for about half an hour. Then wash your hair with water or a soap-nut (ritha) solution.

A treatment with vinegar is also considered helpful for controlling dandruff. Take apple cider vinegar and mix this with shampoo and gently massage your scalp. Leave the vinegar mixture-shampoo mixture on your for about 10-15 minutes and then wash your hair with water.

Lemon juice is also considered an effective remedy for dandruff. Take 2 teaspoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice and massage your scalp with this juice. Let the lemon juice stay for about 10-15 minutes and then wash your hair with water. Lemon juice fights dandruff and lice in hair and also makes your hair lustrous.

You can also prepare a concoction with coconut oil and black pepper at home to use as a dandruff remedy. Mix a cupful of coconut oil with a spoonful of black pepper and then heat it. When it starts boiling, stop heating and let it cool down to room temperature. Sieve this solution with a fine cloth and preserve it in a bottle. Apply this concoction each night on your scalp and massage gently with your fingertips.

Also, do take care of your daily diet: eat raw fruits and vegetables; cut down on tea, coffee, sugary drinks, and chocolates; avoid fried and spicy foods. You should also brush your hair regularly every day so as to improve blood circulation to your scalp and remove any deposited flakes on your scalp.

MoreVinegar Treatment

There are various methods that help you to counteract dandruff. Application of vinegar will help you to fight dandruff seriously. Dilute cider vinegar in same quantity of water and put on the head by cotton and dab it properly on the center part of the scalp. This can be done while shampooing your hair.

Also add this to the final rinsing water. Keep this for a while and make rinse it. Apple cider vinegar, the gold standard of household remedies acts as an antifungal and fungicide and counteracts with the development of the cell inside the root level. Y

You can also spray this vinegar on your scalp while you go to sleep and next morning you rinse it properly while you take your bath. It treats the hair softly and makes it silky. It also acts like a conditioner to the hair.

Just put slight hair oil in your hair that will provide a good potential. If this is not giving good results then switch on to another method. We can keep on trying new methods till it suits our hair. <3=D

cut your hair short

This actually caused more irritation for me than having my hair long. Maybe because of the sun or something?

Psoriasis runs in my family, and I've had minor scalp flareups. A shampoo called T-Gel is the only one that brought me any real relief.

Denorex - It has coal tar in it. The other version of it has something else, I don't remember. It works better than Head and Shoulders in my opinion

^Thanks, I hope we can keep more dietary tips coming.

A dietary tip: try avoiding sugars and bread for a bit. Yeasty things also. Works wonders in preventing dandruff!

Just don't reach for the junky snacks, try to keep your meals small with less carbs and see if it works. The above helps me tremendously when I get some flakes, which happens especially in cold countries and the diet is more bread and heavier than I am used to. Personally, toning down on bread and sweet stuff really helps. Usually just doing that eliminates things altogether for me, but it may be different for others.

Also, massage your head. Before going out, try to rub your scalp vigorously with your fingertips or the palms of your hand. (Heated olive oil is good for this, just shampoo well after). Don't wound yourself, but scratch where itchy to dislodge the flakes, and wash them off. This also helps you from flaking up in public all over yourself or other people. Also give your head a rub after showering, for circulation.

The above also prevents your hair from drying up when you have dandruff. I get really dry hair when I have flakes, because the oils can't travel along my hair as they are blocked. It also can give you a regular, more up-close insight on your condition/progress.

Note: There are two general kinds of dandruff. One is the dry and whitish variety (one experienced by OP). The other, that occurs in people with greasy conditions, is often yellowish flakes and often has a slight unlpeasant smell-- the sensation for this is a mixture of itch and some burning pain. I have found that large amounts of lemongrass tea works very well in the long run for the second (observing people around me), but only have personal experience with the first.

Before you apply the tea tree oil, you have to get rid of the bacteria or possible infection. Apply a solution of 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar (organic, unpasteurized) and 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide in 10 parts water. Leave in for a minute before rinsing out well with water.

A good idea to supplement with the same Apple Cider Vinegar in a dose of two teaspoons in a glass of water once or twice a day.
